DARLING BOY

Written and Performed by Rupert Bevan
Directed by Lucy Rossen

A hilarious and heartbreaking ode to first love, family, sweaty clubs and growing up (whenever that happens...)

Darling Boy feels like he’s failing at his 20’s. He hates the apps, can’t do clubs or casual sex, and feels like a main character in a movie that absolutely no one is paying to see. He’s trying to get over his first love, the memory of which lingers, and there is so much he and his family aren’t talking about.

Hailed by audiences as ‘achingly relatable’, ‘witty and honest’, with a ‘masterful performance’ by actor/writer Rupert Bevan, the show enjoyed two sell-out seasons in Melbourne in 2022, including a sold-out extended run at the Melbourne Fringe Festival. 'Darling Boy' transferred to Sydney in March 2023, as part of Sydney World Pride (Pride Amplified) and will tour to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August.

You don’t want to miss this ‘strikingly honest and incredibly poignant’ coming-of-age comedy drama.

'Fantastic' - Leigh Sales

‘Heart-achingly good. A beautiful coming of age tale with so much colour and poignant relatability I felt young again. Rupert is a star in the making. To convey so much in such a short space of time, with just himself, shows his extraordinary talent. An absolute triumph’.

Shannon Molloy, Author

‘As dramaturg and director, Lucy Rossen is perfectly attuned to the talents of her performer and the subtle emotional and comedic beats of the script. In blocking, Rossen makes the most of Bevan’s unbridled energy and athleticism, shooting them from one side of the stage to the other and even into the audience in perfect complement to important emotive, or plot-driven moments... There is something more than ‘darling’ about this heart-warming production.’
